EARTH MOVEMENTS // CONNECTED
December, 2023
"Inspired by the seismicity of the Abruzzo landscape—its multiple sedimentary structures and the spiritual occupation of the land visible in the region's rock formations—I created Strumento Radicale (instrument with roots). This sound sculpture is the first result of my research: a listening device, an instrument designed to connect to the inaudible, to the deep vibrations of the ground and the imperceptible movements of the Earth."
The Project
The Centro Corradino d'Ascanio welcomed Nadine Schütz — artist, researcher, and sound architect — for a research residency focused on exploring the theme of terrestrial movement from an acoustic perspective.
This initiative is part of an ongoing artistic research initiative developed by the Center in collaboration with Professor Jérôme Vergne of the EOST (École et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre) at the University of Strasbourg.
During her stay, Nadine Schütz mapped the earth's movements in the areas near the Center, following water lines and geological traces, while cross-referencing this data with local practices and cultures rooted in these soils and landscapes. This research gave rise to a series of soundscapes that invite listeners to experience the movement of the Earth in the municipality of Raiano and at several sites in the Abruzzo region.

The Artist
Nadine Schütz – (((Echora))) – mix together landscape, architecture, acoustics, and music, exploring the potential of sound as a landscape element. Through theoretical research and artistic projects at various scales, her work investigates the relationship between human experience and a form of sensory ecology. Whether through sound installations or the design of acoustic atmospheres and spatialities, her practice combines technical precision with poetic sensibility, offering reflections on architecture, the city, the landscape, and society.
